As usual we were met by 200+ smiling faces, jumping and singing as they ran next to the van greeting us with much anticipation. The seniors (the older children at Fiwagoh) unloaded the van and we reconnected with the kids for a brief time. Soon the team began sorting through all the luggage and organizing the camp supplies. Monday would be filled with camp preparation and team meetings and then the camp ran from Tuesday – Friday with a follow-up on the following Monday.
Math/Science Camp: Day 1
Daily Biblical Theme: Treasures and Man vs. Nature
Secondary Kids
The Team Leaders for Secondary Camp
The objective for the campers, grades 7-11 and senior kids that are not in school, was to compete in a digital scavenger hunt capturing photographs of mathematical shapes and themes found in nature or man made with the aid of digital cameras at the end of the 1st day of camp. To jump start the day campers were put into their color coded groups and brainstormed geometry vocabulary. Binders loaded with school supplies were distributed to each camper. Topics were then introduced and/or reviewed that would aid in the success of the scavenger hunt. Some items that were introduced and discussed were included Pascal’s Triangle, the Fibonacci numbers, symmetry, conic sections, math in nature, and many other applicable math concepts.
Prior to letting the teams out to collect their photos for the scavenger hunt, each team was issued a watch, digital camera, clipboard, and the game sheet rules with instructions. The teams, including the teachers from the school at Fiwagoh, were dismissed to begin their search. It was a full day of fun and difficult for some teams to stop. It was totally fun to see the teachers from Fiwagoh get involved. More stories about this later:)

In addition to collecting pictures of mathematical objects campers were also challenged with a Biblical scavenger hunt. Bible verses were to be completed and identified and the missing word (object) was to be found hidden somewhere along the course
Looking back now and seeing the pictures I feel all in all it was a great day. At the time we Americans. or should I say I, was a bit stressed as we were working out of our element in more ways than one.
Elementary Day 1
This wonderful group of teachers kept the same Biblical theme each day yet did other activities that related to the theme. They had over 160 kids to work with! One of the items the campers learned on the first day was symmetry. The made butterflies that would balance anywhere.....see below.
Week 1, Camp day 2 next.
