Kenya 2015 Week 1, Camp Day 2 and 3

Team 1: Week One

Math/Science Camp: Day 2 and 3

Daily Biblical Theme: Joseph and His Coat of Many Colors

Secondary Camp

We discovered that secondary teacher, Hillary, was gifted in art as well.

This day was all about color.  For the Opening Activity the campers where challenged to color in a map of Africa using as few colors as possible with the following guidelines:  no two countries sharing a border could have the same color.  This is a famous math challenge known as "The Four Color Problem."  It was fun to see the Kenyan teachers becoming a part of the team and getting actively involved with the camp!

There were two outcomes for Day Two of camp.  Teams were split into one of two areas.  One set of campers made tie-dye t-shirts by completing a science experiment with Sharpie permanent markers and rubbing alcohol.  The other team discovered the symmetry of kaleidoscopes and then built their own kaleidoscopes using PVC piping materials, glue guns, beads, and acrylic sheets. This all took longer than expected so we continued this during Day Three of camp.

Learning symmetry and building kaleidoscopes.

The student holding the paper , Dennis, was the other Form 3 students I had the  privilege of teaching.

Elementary Tie-dyes

By the way in the evening time at worship some of the team members have been reading a narrative of the story of the Bible and the reading for this evening just happened to be Noah and the rainbow!  Also we had rain today and saw a beautiful rainbow in the sky.  Coincidence on a day where the theme was based on color, I think not.

Items found in purple in where supplied by donations.  Thank you to all that contributed!!
